All you need to do now is save the image as a transparent PNG. Once you have finished with the selection press Cmd-X (Mac) or Crtl-X (Windows) to copy and remove the selection. Selecting the sky ready for removal from the panoramic image You can do this in one go or lots of smaller sections. On the left hand side on the tool bar select the lasso tool. Once you’ve done that you are ready to select the parts of the image you want to remove. Select Transparent from the new image dialog Note: There is another way of doing this by creating a new image and selecting the background contents as transparent from the drop down before you click Create. Once you have a second layer you will need to remove the original background layer by right clicking on it and selecting Delete Layer. One fantastic feature of Stellarium is to be able to customise the landscape used in the foreground which is really helpful if planning a shoot at home and you have lots of trees in the garden like I do.īefore I get started, it’s worth letting you know that these instructions work for version 0.20.3 of Stellarium. You can use this to just look at what is in the night sky, plan your viewing evenings ahead of time and also control your telescope to find targets in the night sky. Stellarium is a fantastic, free, application which works on many platforms, from Windows, to Linux and Mac. Most tutorials talk about how to do things on Windows and but there is very little out there for OS X. My particular favourite for iOS is Sky Guide, however, this article will be talking about Stellarium on OS X and Windows. There are many star gazing apps out there for both desktop machines and mobile devices.
